Nik and the Dragonfly (an O4L excerpt)

Nik held a dragonfly today. We were walking down the street, finishing our nature walk, when he spotted a beautiful, big dragonfly on the road. Only one leg seemed to move and Nik suggested that it was sleeping. I said that I thought it might have flown into something and become stunned, or perhaps it was just too cold. Nik put his finger beside it and the dragonfly slowly climbed onto it. Nik carried “Nikkin” (as he dubbed it) down to his grandma's house and sat down to study the beautiful insect. Nik looked carefully at the dragonfly and suggested that his tail might not be quite right. Nik sat with “Nikkin” on the porch and watched as Nikkin began to get more active. When he had first picked Nikkin up, only Nikkin's front legs would work; but as the minutes went on, Nik would call out to the rest of us “Nikkin is moving all his legs.” then “Nikkin is moving his wings.” and finally “Nikkin is trying to fly.” Nikkin attempted flight and fell to the ground, and a tearful Nik picked him back up and they returned to the porch. We walked onto the lawn, and Nik and Nikkin stood in the sunshine so that I could take pictures, and after the fourth snapshot, Nikkin began to quiver and flitter and he flew away. Nik was stunned for a moment, but then his arms shot straight up in a victory stance. “Nature Nut victory number one!” He announced. “I helped a dragonfly get better!”
When his grandmother came home, Nik greeted her at the door with an excited “Guess what happened on our nature walk?”
“Did a racoon run up your pant leg?” she asked.
“No, better!” he enthused. “I carried a tired dragonfly all the way down the road and sat with him until he was healed and flew away.”
“Well,” she responded as only a Community Support Worker could. “I guess he thought you were the Handydart.”

Jimmy Barkley and that other grasshopper

We found these guys while geocaching. Jimmy Barkley was the biggest (about 3 to 3 1/2 inches long). He looks like he was made out of dried leaves...much different than any grasshopper we'd seen before.

Grasshopper

This funny fellow somehow found himself at the top of our six-foot-plus sunflower and was having a lovely sunbath until I disturbed him.

Black, purple and blue seastars

Ilya and I thought these little guys were so sweet, I hiked back across the beach to get the camcorder. The picture doesn't do them justice at all...

The Rock Star

The bright orange jasper caught my eye, and when I turned it over, there was a sweet little limpet with a six armed star design on it.

Hermit Crab

We found quite a few hermit crabs at the beach today, and loaded up a bucket full just to look at. This guy got to be the "poster crab".

Sunflower Star

This is not our photo, but we did manage to find one washing up in the tide. I wasn't sure if it was alive or dead, but I put it down and ran up to get the camera, and in the time it took me to stop for fish and chips (ok, it wasn't just the camera I was running up to), the tide came in and it was gone. It fit into my hand, and you could see at least three little extra arms growing in. So sweet!

It is hard to tell from this photo, but we found our first ever black sea star.

Arwen likes to rescue sea stars. When the tide goes out, she rushes around retrieving them and then returning them to the water. We egg her on, standing near the sea star, saying, "Ayudeme!" and then sing the Diego song to her as she runs back with the little "pet" as she calls it (or sometimes "baby") to the shore.

The Jelly from the Abyss

We found a lovely big, lion's mane jellyfish at the French Creek marina. Unfortunately, Judah found that they do still sting a little even after they are dead...

Isn't it beautiful!!!

Little Green Bug

Ioan found this little green bug in the garden.
